Rams on Ice

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, the St. Robert Varsity Ice Hockey team pulled off a miraculous comeback against Our Lady of the Lake in their final regular season game at R.J Clatworthy Arena. The Rams struggled to score in the early stages of the game, heading into the third period with a 2-0 deficit. However, outstanding goaltending from Mathew F. and great defensive play prevented any further opposition scoring. The offense went to work late in the game, including a game winning goal with 30 seconds left by Kyle A.

The Rams only dressed 11 skaters that game, a recurring theme throughout the past two seasons. Although the Rams pulled off a comeback late in the game, the skaters were visibly tired. When asked about his thoughts on the situation, defenseman Young L. (12) replied, “Yeah, we need everybody to come out and play especially when the playoffs roll around. We got away with this game because of Mat’s goaltending. I might have to start pulling out some all star high slot clap bombs to make up for the lack of scoring.”

Onward to the Playoffs

The Rams finished the regular season with three wins, one loss, and four ties which placed them second in the Eastern division. The varsity ice hockey team will commence their playoff run on Thursday, February 5 as they will face off against St. Joan of Arc. When asked about what the team needs to focus on in the playoffs, head coach Mr. Zavagno replied, “We need to focus on finding a killer instinct because with four ties and having had opportunities to pull away and not being able to capitalize on our scoring chances, we’ve restricted ourselves. We also need to tighten up on bad penalties, especially late in a game.”
