A Win for the Liberals is a Win for Students

After a painfully long 10 years of Stephen Harper as Prime Minister, we finally see the change many have dreamed of, in the form of Justin Trudeau. As a young person, in Canada, I find myself wondering how I could possibly one day start my own life when I know that Canada is known for its large student debts and high competition for favorable jobs. However, after knowing Justin Trudeau and his Liberals are in power, many of my doubts have started to dissolve.

Currently, many youth and new graduates are struggling to find jobs. However, PM Justin Trudeau has promised to create 40,000 jobs for youth currently studying and the newly graduated. The Liberals will invest $300 million every year in a new Youth Employment Strategy and encourage more companies to hire young people. This will give youth the opportunity to get the experience they need to grow  professionally. The Liberals have also promised to invest in training for certain jobs and more co-op opportunities for students studying in different fields including business and engineering.

In addition, many new graduates are struggling to pay off college and university debts that just keep building as time passes. This is because interest compounds, and the exponential increase of debts are delaying young adults from buying their first homes and much more. As Trudeau says, “That’s a tough way to get your start in the world.” Student debt is an issue so many people face and it’s time that it changes. A Liberal federal government promises to pay interest for student debts until they start to make $25000 annually. The Liberals have pledged to increase the maximum Canada Student Grant and increase the income threshold, giving more students an opportunity to apply for the program.

The Liberals have promised to do some great things for young people across Canada. All I and many other young Canadians can do now is wait and hope the changes are put into action soon.
