19-year old Sam Oosterhoff has just become the youngest person ever elected and sworn into Ontario’s legislature.
Representing the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, Oosterhoff is now the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the riding of Niagara-West Glanbrook. All his accomplishments didn’t come easy. His anti-abortion stance and opposition to same-sex marriage was not accepted by everyone including the Liberals; he was highly criticized for his opposition. Oosterhoff expressed his disapproval of Bill 28, which legally recognized same-sex couples and people who use reproductive technology as parents, because it could lead to litigation on the child.
Seeing Oosterhoff’s accomplishments, it may seem big in comparison to our own or even the things we’re striving for. They do, however, have one thing in common, and it’s having a goal. We each have our own goals that we’re hoping to achieve, whether in school or in sports, big or small. There will be barriers each of us will have to face, and times when everything seems to go against one’s way; however Oosterhoff’s experience showed that despite all the criticism he received, he did what he believed in and went with it. With the right amount of effort and determination, what can’t be done?
Anything is possible.
