On November 26, 99 beauty queens attended the 66th Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas hoping to return home with a crown and title of Miss Universe.

Contestants representing their countries were divided into 3 distinct categories: The Americas, Europe, and Africa and Asia-Pacific. There were 4 women selected from each category and 4 wild card choices to advance to the Top 16 and the next round. The Top 16 countries were Canada, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Ghana, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, Croatia, Great Britain, Colombia, USA, Brazil, Philippines, Venezuela, Jamaica, and China.

“It’s so great to see so many empowering women from all over the world displaying their beauty, knowledge, experience, and wisdom with others.” Anna Luo (9) said.

The events that the pageant contestants participated in were a swimsuit competition, a gown competition, and a final question regarding their opinions on world issues, from terrorism to social media to sexual harassment. These events slowly narrowed the contestants down and the Top 3 remaining countries were Jamaica, Colombia and South Africa.

In the last event, which would determine which one of the top 3 contestants would bring home the crown and title of “Miss Universe”, the women were asked to answer a question about the quality they’re proudest of and how they would utilize it as Miss Universe. Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters proved to be the most versatile and took home the title while Miss Columbia, Laura Gonzalez was the runner-up and Jamaica’s Davina Bennett came in third.

“My Dreams never stop growing and I never stop chasing them. I don’t believe in waiting for an opportunity to rise, but rather in creating one.” said Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.
