Introduction

The Summer Olympic Games are a major international multi-sport event held once every four years.  Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the event was postponed for the first time in history to 2021. With the pandemic having killed over two million individuals worldwide, many people are skeptical whether the Olympics will be held.

Logistics:

Approximately 15,490 Olympic and Paralympic athletes from 206 nations and territories are expected to  travel to Tokyo for the Olympic Games along with the 500 000 forecasted spectators. Given the international travel restrictions and the grounding of airplanes, the travelling aspect of the games is a significant obstacle. So far, the organizers for these games have remained tight lipped on the safety guidelines surrounding these games with plans yet to be released. Nevertheless, the IOC and Japanese officials are committed to creating a safe environment for all people involved.

Recent polls show that approximately 80% of Japan’s citizens believe the games should be cancelled or postponed again. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stated that if the Olympics can not be held in 2021, they will be cancelled. However, for Japan’s leader, cancellation is not an option. $12.6 billion have already been spent on these games. In fact, the Tokyo Olympics are set on track to becoming the most expensive Olympics. The complete cancellation of the Olympics will bring further financial woes and cost Japan $41.5 billion. Japan’s leaders remain optimistically positive that the games will go on. In a recent press meeting with lawmakers, Yoshiro Mori, a former Japanese prime minister, declared, “We should pass on the discussion of whether we will hold the games or not, but instead discuss how we should hold it.” Meanwhile, Tokyo’s governor, Yuriko Koike, remarked “Tokyo 2020 will be symbolic to prove that people, all together from across the world, have defeated the virus. ” These remarks are echoed by the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee who announced, “No matter what situation would be with the coronavirus, we will hold the games.”  The IOC has also aggressively pushed back on criticism and pledged its full support. Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee had little doubts and stated  “Tokyo is the best ever prepared Olympic city. We are very, very confident, and at this moment, we have no reason to believe that the Games could not take place.”

Conclusion

This year, the Olympics have higher stakes than before. The real challenges no longer lie in the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals a country wins, but how the world can reunite and come together as a family. As Bach remarked, “The Olympics can be light at the end of a dark tunnel.”
