Spirits of the Lights

Bettie rested upon the metal bar, looking down at the asphalt far below and listening to the rushing traffic. The darkness obscured her already incorporeal form.

Just as she was starting to get impatient, Liz showed up.

“What took you so long?”

“I was just refilling my pouch of powder,” Liz protested, scampering up the metal pole.

“You could’ve done that on any night,” Bettie groaned. “Okay, what do you want to do for this light?”

“I was thinking luck,” he said.

“Didn’t we do something fortune-related for this light last time?” Bettie’s prehensile tail waved in the air.

“Misfortune, then?” Liz unclasped the pouch around his neck.

Liz climbed down onto the base of the traffic light. “Most of the lights will probably be filled by the time we get there,” he warned. “Everyone wants those lights.”

With one hand, he removed the curved lens of the lightbulb. In the hollow space of the traffic light was a blinding orb of emerald light. Liz reached into his pouch and took out a handful of shimmering grey dust. “Misfortune,” he whispered, and the dust began to glow.

Liz reached his paw into the light, placing the dust inside. He replaced the cover of the light and climbed back up.

Watching the dust spiraling through the air onto the passengers below, Bettie wondered how many of them would come upon the misfortune carried in the essence later on.

It didn’t bother her. After all, they distributed both fortune and misfortune. It was simply their job to bring an unpredictable touch to these lives.

“Want to race to Mainstreet?” Bettie offered.

Mischievous laughter rang through the air as the two spirits raced away, while the dust continued to rain down from the traffic lights, invisible to all those below.
