A Play for Ghosts

“I think we’re late,” Lisa said to Justin as they stepped into the old chapel.

To the right of the door was a translucent grey figure in a cap and jacket. Lisa nodded to the attendant, who had been there to greet them every evening.

The building had been the town chapel decades ago before being abandoned. The wooden pews were weathered and crumbling. Despite that, they were filled with dozens of ghosts, their silvery outlines shimmering in the late evening light.

At the front of the church, the sanctuary had been cleared to make an empty raised dais. Sure enough, the show had already started. The ghosts were focused on the play being acted onstage by more ghosts.

A few of them turned to smile at Lisa and Justin in welcome. Nobody acted as if anything out of the ordinary happened. After coming to the shows for more than a month, the ghosts were used to their presence.

Lisa and Justin took their seats. They had first explored the local “haunted church” on a dare, and then discovered the gatherings held there by the ghosts. The ghosts had appeared taken aback at having visitors but nobody remarked on them or seemed to mind, so Lisa and Justin had kept attending.

They watched the play unfold, acted by spectres in sweeping coats and flouncy ethereal dresses. The ghosts clapped when it ended, their applause hushed by their intangible hands.

The ghost who had played the lead character stood at the front of the stage and spoke. “We have guests from the living here with us.”

The ghosts turned to stare at Lisa and Justin.

“They have been here for a while, watching our plays. We have acted for them and provided them with much entertainment.”

Two ghosts brought out a pair of flowing robes. Unlike the clothes of the ghosts, the robes seemed more corporeal, floating in the air like a heavy smoke. “Now it is time for them to entertain us.”

Behind Lisa, they heard the thud of bolts dropping into place. She whirled around, staring at the doors. They had never noticed locks on them before.

“It is your turn to play.” The lead actor thrust the robes at them. “Don’t even think of leaving before we’re done.”

Lisa and Justin stared at each other helplessly, then picked up the clothes.
