Birdsong

The lamp cast a warm golden circle of light over the scattered sheets of paper. I tapped my pen on the wooden desk to a slow beat, trying to focus on the calculations before me.

The curving lines of all the letters seemed to blur together as my eyes scanned over them again and again. The edge of each number stood out distinctly, the ink tracing out the furrows in the page where I had pressed too hard into the surface of the paper.

There was a low humming sound in my head. I paused, trying to tell where it was coming from.

Nothing but the still summer night air drifting in from the open window and the soft buzz of the refrigerator downstairs.

Shaking my head, I turned back to the page.

A minute later, I became aware of the humming sound again. It had wormed its way into my senses gradually, at first only a barely perceptible thrum, then growing into a strange murmur. I gave up working and pushed back from my desk, perplexed.

The sound was growing louder. There was an almost musical quality to it, a tinkling of notes that resonated in the background.

It seemed to be emanating from everywhere at once, but I focused on it for a moment and traced it to the open window.

I brushed aside the white curtain, and an incredible sight met my eyes.

Right outside my window was a giant white albatross. Its feathers were so pale that they almost seemed to glow in the moonlight. There was a silver glimmering on its eyes, beak, and edges of feathers that I was sure was actually glowing.

Most incredulously, it was floating in midair, not flying or flapping its wings, which were folded up like those of a duck drifting on water.

The bird inclined its head at me majestically while the music swelled around us, as if asking what I was staring at.
