Enchanted Meadow

My eyes slowly peeled open as the piercing rays of the sun shone through the draped curtains of my room. Sleep weighed heavily on my eyelids and my fatigued body refused to budge. Yet the loud chirping from outside is what pulled me from my slumber.

Suddenly, elation had overcome my tiredness as I hauled myself out of bed. My movements were sluggish but my eyes were sharp and determined as I pulled the curtains and eased the window open.

Sweltering summer heat fanned my cheeks as the humidity had already begun to creep up my neck and my eyes squinted at the brightness. Yet, another part of me basked in the comforting warmth as my eyes gazed over the acres of land I owned.

An endless field of wildflowers spanned the area with dewy grass that surrounded a meagre gleaming pond. The sun shone directly as the shimmering water illuminated the dandelion seeds that drifted over the pond. A soft breeze weaved through the air as the flowers swayed in the wind like dancing figurines.

Trees of all sizes bordered the edge of my fenced-off property. Their tall towering figures imposed dark shadows over the rest of the area. But I watched in delight as the shadows touched the luscious grass and suddenly, frost had engulfed the tips and expanded like the clouds clearing for sunrise.

The sight was enough to convince me to race down the stairs and rush out the door as I hurried out and paused to watch the frigid ice unwind on the remnants of summer heat.

Slowly, the frost trailed the stem of the flowers as it coiled up and froze the petals. The motionless pond froze in streaks of ice that resembled crystals. An icy flurry descended upon the whole area as plants wilted and the garden was crushed with the speckles of snow.

Frost climbed up the trunk of the trees as the leaves fell and the branches were encased in the slippery surface of the ice. It was endearing to watch and I stood mesmerized at my own little enchanted meadow. Almost instantly, I felt the shift from a warm sunny day to the nipping chill of frigid air.
