Should historical artifacts be studied at the risk of damage, or preserved as much as possible?

Historical artifacts are a very important part of learning and understanding past history and culture. Studying historical artifacts gives us invaluable insight that is irreplaceable since otherwise society would not have the same knowledge about the past as it does now.

Firstly, it is important to realize that historical artifacts are very carefully managed as they are mostly only handled by experts who know how to preserve the objects as much as possible. In our current society, there are long processes dedicated to the protection of historical artifacts but this does not detract from the ability of scientists, historians, etc. to study these objects.

Historical artifacts being preserved as much as possible may mean these objects being kept at a location inaccessible to general public. People gain a lot with their interactions with these interesting and special artifacts.

Plus, without the opportunity to study it, the importance of the act of discovering it can be undermined. What is the point of discovering an object if the study of it is limited – since discovering it does not benefit in advancing the knowledge of society?

As a result of this, I think it’s very important to continue to study historical artifacts, even at risk of damage because the knowledge gained from this act is simply invaluable. Current processes ensure that these artifacts are sufficiently protected.
