A tradition at our school that is most looked forward to is Civvies Day. It is a special day at our school that usually occurs every first Thursday of the month. It is a chance for students to wear whatever they wish, as long as it conforms to the Dress Code and Student Code of Conduct. Everyone looks forward to this day as they can express themselves through their fashion and get out of the stiff uniform that they wear every day.
We were intrigued by the opinion of the student population at our school regarding Civvies. So, we conducted a sample survey of students by posting a google form on various social media profiles. We gathered responses from 71 students, though little compared to the entire population. 60% of the responses were from students in grade nine, 27% from grade ten, and thirteen percent from grades 11 and 12. Based on these responses, we were able to conclude that students at St. Robert enjoyed and looked forward to Civvies days.
Furthermore, 98% of students surveyed said that they would like more Civvies days because it “provides freedom and more flexibility, especially during times when (…) the uniform isn’t warm enough” (Elaine C, Grade 9). Additionally, students pointed out the fact that uniforms were extremely uncomfortable because of the materials used to make them. On the other hand, two percent of the surveyed students voiced that “there’s no point of a uniform school if there’s more [Civvies]” (Anonymous, Grade 10).
Overall, the majority of the student population has expressed their desire for more Civvies days throughout the school year.
