“Hey, look over there!” the fake-fanged boy in the vampire cape pointed behind his companion’s shoulder. It was Halloween, the sky was beginning to darken – it was going to be a moonless night. The other boy, Miguel, has fake stitches on his arms and face, Frankenstein-style. Turning to look, Reemo, dressed as a vampire, knocked the breath out of an unsuspecting Miguel. A few of the other trick-or-treaters stopped and gave the boys scornful looks at Miguel’s startled cry.
“Trick or treat!” Reemo yells as he runs away from Miguel.
“Hey! No fair!” recovering his breath, Miguel yells back.
Miguel sets off, chasing the fluttering cape down the darkening road. Suddenly, Reemo takes an unexpected turn and disappears from view. Miguel staggers to a halt, his heart beating at the sight before his eyes.
Lantern light, mimicking the elegance of moonlight, spills down over a glistening pond framed by protruding roots and wilting pondweed. The meow of a cat startles the Frankenstein-clad boy out of his reverie. A shadow dances on the edge of the lighted scene.
Intrigued, yet wary, Miguel inches towards the pond, eager to see for himself what further beauty it holds.
Once more, with his heart battering in his chest, Miguel halts in his tracks. He has an odd suspicion that the cat noises and the glistening pond are all part of a prank Reemo is playing on him. That must be it, because if it wasn’t, then this unsettling feeling that has washed over him is more than enough reason to turn back immediately.
Except – with a startling sense of doom, Miguel realized he had no idea where he was or how to get back home.
All of a sudden, a shadow materialized into the form of a woman. Her slate grey robe reached just below her ocean blue knees. Miguel’s eyes widened at the dancing stitches on her arms and legs. Disheveled auburn hair, speckled with shadow, framed her hollow-eyed, sunken face. The remains of what used to be a snow white wedding veil graced her scraggly head.
“I was once a beautiful bride with a life of love ahead” she tilted her head and began to sing off-key.

“Just before the big day, my groom turned tail,” her face scrunched with scorn.
“As I waited ‘neath the oak tree, goons came and off my jewels they fed” the hatred in her voice became more and more apparent.
“I fell and rose, all alone – pale and afraid.” Something moved at her feet. Bending down, she picks it up and Miguel takes a step back. A black cat with a Jack O’Lantern alight nestled in her arms.
“Now my love has come back to me – I am loved, don’t you see?” Stroking the cat, she disappeared as quietly as she had appeared, her chant echoing in the night of the surrounding darkness.
A light tap on his shoulder brought Miguel back to earth. Terrified, he whips around, expecting the lady to have somehow transported behind him. Instead, he is faced with an oddly-pumpkin-like grin on his friend’s face. Reemo’s grin disappears as he begins to understand Miguel’s terror.
“What are you a pussy?” This question shook Miguel out of his trance.
“You know, I officially despise cats.” He began to walk away, then he stopped as if remembering something. “And I’m never gonna eat another pumpkin again,” he added with conviction.
Reemo nods slowly and silently and began to walk back home. Miguel said nothing the entire way, looking beneath every lantern they passed as if waiting for a ghost to walk out of the light and shadows.
Reemo wondered what could have happened to Miguel as they reached their neighbourhood once more. Children and parents still milled about, despite the dim light of the street lights. Laughter and colours attacked Miguel’s senses as he became aware of his surroundings.
A little girl dressed as a cat chasing a boy in a pumpkin costume raced past them. At the sight of them, Miguel froze on the spot. Then, he ran home screaming at the top of his lungs.
