On Friday, November 9th, 2018, the school gathered solemnly to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the future of our nation.
Commemorated on November 11th, 2018, Remembrance Day is a memorial day established after World War I to honour those who died in duty to their countries. Ceremonies take place across the country, with the official national ceremonies taking place in Ottawa.
The Remembrance Day Assembly was split into two sessions: 1st period for the grade 10s and 12s, and the 2nd period for the grade 9s and 11s. Sonorous but sublime performances were given by the concert choir and senior band, with students remarking, “I liked the trumpet part” and “The music was good”.
Honouring the St. Robert CHS tradition, a member of the army was invited as a guest speaker. This year, the guest was Sergeant Albert Kim. After explaining his own military experience, he told the stories of the soldiers who came before him, most notably of Elmo Sully and his brothers. Hailing from Eastern Ontario, the Sullys were only teenagers when they were thrust into the cold forefront of the Great War. They survived, but many other Canadian soldiers were not so lucky.
