A Day of Despair

Dane Recaido (11) | STAFF REPORTER

The jingling of bells reverberated softly around town. Faint beams of lights twinkled around the balconies of the passing houses. A flurry of snow blew in from the east as it gently blanketed the ground.

Cottages full of decorations lined the street as loud chatter filled the silence outside. Their stone walls and tapered roofs were already coated in snow. Families and friends gathered within each household.

Tables were full of food as the air was enveloped in delicious smells. Not one house was barren of laughter and celebration.

Yet, I quietly strode past them in complete silence as I made my way to the last house on the right.

The streets were empty as I walked down the sidewalks. The dull flickering of the streetlights illuminated the path to my home. The one house on this street that was devoid of decorations and light.

I slipped through my doorway. I was greeted with uncomfortable silence with an empty dinner table and no company.

There was no laughter, no joy, nor anyone to talk to. I had accepted that today embodied a day of despair for me, which was so unlike the rest of the town.

But a knock at the door is what compelled my disheartening thoughts to erase.

Slowly, I pulled it open. Not at all expecting the sight before me.

A couple of children smiled expectantly at me. They were dressed in thick jackets and green mittens lined with red stitching. They all wore Christmas hats that accompanied their red and white scarves.

One of them had a tin box shaped like a wreath. Inside were cookies decorated messily with red and green frosting. The others were empty-handed.

But just when I assumed they had mistaken my house for someone else, they started singing.

It was a slow melody but one filled with bright enjoyment and stifling joy.

A slow smile crept onto my face.

My heart warmed at the prospect as I accepted the warm cookies they had brought over and their Christmas carols.

There was a spirit to them that was contagious and so genuine. It was enough to fill my empty home with enough joy that I would cherish forever.
