Canada is experiencing a rise in homeless dogs, amounting close to 2,000,000 abandoned dogs. The 2015 Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) report disclosed some alarming statistics on euthanasia. Relative to the population of the shelter, up to 12 percent of dogs are euthanized, and 2 percent of those dogs euthanized were healthy dogs. Imagine the emotional and mental trauma of being rejected by a family that promised to love you, and thus waiting on death row because you are just not worth the space and care. It is a cruel reality people constantly overlook.

Hanniel Kim (12), a recent dog owner, after hearing the alarming numbers of abandoned dogs replied, “That is why I waited 17 years before getting my puppy, so that I was one hundred percent sure that I was in it for the long-haul.” We too are in love with the thought of having a dog, but fail to deeply reflect on the serious changes a new addition to the family may have.

Therefore, before adopting a dog, pet owners-to-be must deeply consider the following: You do not care for a dog at your convenience. In order to reap the joys of a dog, responsibilities must be maintained all the time. This includes proper vaccinations, check-ups, cleanups, and adequate attention. Additionally, a dog is a living and breathing creature, making the term, “pet” sound quite outdated.

A dog is not a pet, but an official member of the family who deserves equal care, consideration, and love as every other member. Until this mentality is engraved into your minds, a dog is not meant to be adopted. Therefore, before jumping into getting a dog, take ample amount of time to understand the choices you are making, because if you can’t commit, getting a dog is just not the right fit.
