“A Little Late with Lilly Singh” had an hour long premiere on September 16 replacing “Last Call with Carson Daly” on NBC after 18 seasons. Its official Youtube channel posted the series premiere episodes slightly before at 10:00 pm ET. Lily Singh, a 30-year-old YouTube star is the first bisexual woman of colour to host a late-night show on a major TV network. Singh amassed nearly 15 million subscribers on Youtube where she uploads everything from entertainment and pop culture to her experience as a child of immigrant parents.
Staying true to her roots, Singh has managed to transfer the energy and enthusiasm she exhibits online into a mainstream TV show. Deciding to stray away from politics, her late night show offers a refreshing break. Singh’s first episode on Monday starred Rainn Wilson and Mindy Kaling from The Office, Saturday Night Live superstar, Kenan Thompson, sitcom star, Tracee Ellis Ross and comedian, Chelsea Handler also made appearances.
With rave reviews from critics, Singh’s late night show is off to a successful start. Ratings of the premiere episode were steady and highly positive with over more than two million viewers tuning in for the live show. As The Verge stated in its review, “Singh’s NBC series debut proves late night TV and YouTube need each other.”
