On November 10th, the St. Robert’s varsity girl’s basketball team had their last game of the season against St. Brother Andre in the playoffs. It was a well-played game that finished 55-47 in St. Brother Andre’s favour. As the season ended, we interviewed some members of the team and Ms. Morale, who was the coach, about the teamwork, training, and effort put into the season this year.
“The season was overall super fun! The team grew a lot closer together and we all definitely learned a lot about both the game of basketball, and ourselves. Although we had a disappointing loss that ended our playoff run, we are all very grateful to have had the opportunity to […] represent our school.” said Melody P. (Gr. 12), who was part of the starting line as a power forward, about her experience on the team this season.
There were fifteen girls on the team and over the course of two months, the girls trained three times a week. The team met their first game after just one practice! Their coach, Ms. Morale, said that “During the first game, I saw the potential in them. And I told them that,” about the growth of the team. “[The] tryouts were overwhelming because there were so many different levels of physical skill and understanding of the game.” With each practice, the team improved.
The hardest game to score points was against King City, whose team is in Tier 1. Five teammates were unable to attend and our varsity girls’ team simply could not keep up with the constant three-pointers and skill of the opposing team. However, they kept trying and gave their best. Members say that they had equal strengths and weaknesses in both offence and defence. Mistakes were made in both categories but the team was able to learn and bounce back for the next time. They learned to work together as a team and strengthened their chemistry to play better on both offensive and defensive ends.
Thank you to our varsity girl’s basketball team and Ms. Morale for your teamwork and effort this season!
