The amusement park is desolate, painted in dim shades of grey. Creaks, ominous, can be heard periodically, the equipment tilting slowly with the wind. Silent footsteps across great swaths of dirt, a boy bends, picks up candy wrappers, mementos of a time long past. Wandering, as unanchored to this world as the scene before us, he runs a hand along the carousel. Years of dust is brushed away, revealing what would have once been a grand attraction.
A mirror. The carousel was made of mirrors, all lined with gold, and all perfectly uncracked. But the reflection of a mirror, usually so predictable, has erased the boy from view, showing, instead, the carnival in what might’ve been its full glory, once upon a time. How curious, he thinks, leaning in with bright eyes and an outstretched hand.

Although the scene before him remains as sad and empty around him, faint laughter suddenly dances through the air, twisting and entwining with the smell of cotton candy. To any onlooker, this boy and his mirror would have been instantly noticeable, two bright patches of colour and life among the empty ruins.
He leans, falls in, never to be seen again. Wakes up to a beautiful carousel, as lit up and full of life as the rides surrounding it. As music and excitement twist freely through the air, he looks up to a clear blue sky. How curious, he thinks, not of the situation at hand, but that he would feel so at home in a loud, populated place like this. How curious, that although he hasn’t taken even a single step into this new world, he already knows that he never wants to leave.
How curious indeed.
