Mr. Wonderful’s not so wonderful decision to run for Conservative leader

Kevin O’Leary

KATHERINE DICK (12) | STAFF REPORTER

“The nation of Canada announced today that it is officially beginning work on a remake of a very unpopular American horror/drama where an entitled male reality television show character with dangerously high blood pressure suddenly decides he’d like to run for the highest office in his country for no other reason than to amass more personal wealth and status,” a CBC comedy article read earlier this week after Kevin O’Leary entered the Conservative Leadership race. read more

The Failure of this Year’s Remembrance Day Procedures

As a generation fortunate to have never experienced the trauma of war, and with our last connections of the world war fleeting; it is important to ensure students are receiving proper education regarding the millions of brave individuals who honourably served our country. Ontario is currently one of four Canadian provinces to not recognize Remembrance Day as a statutory holiday. I strongly agree with this position, as it ensures people cannot undermine the significant date due to personal convenience, and the proper education is provided for students prepared by education professionals. Or so I once believed. read more

Addressing and Closing the Canadian Pay Gap

It has been 98 years since Canadian women were first given the opportunity to vote in a federal election, 31 years since the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaranteed sexual equality under federal law, and 29 years since the Ontario government passed the Pay Equality Act (a provincial government statue to enforce wage equality for females). Evidently, thanks to many great men and women who have come before us and fought for equality, women’s rights and standing in society have drastically progressed. read more

Senior Girls Basketball Team Update

The St. Robert Senior Girls Basketball team has been hitting the court almost everyday, and that practice has been paying off. As last year’s Senior Girls Basketball Team brought home the Tier 2 Championship for the 2014 season, the expectations for this year have been set high and the girls have been on route to victory. While participating in pre-season tournaments, the girls bonded and came together as a team; learning about each others ways of play and forming relationships. Team Captains Brianna I. (12) and Christina C. (12) have been leading the team through each game and encouraging the players to leave it all on the court. “So far it looks like the team has great chemistry on and off the court and I can see us going far in the playoffs with the skill we possess,” reports Christina Chin.  Brianna leads the way for the team in scoring, averaging 20 points a game. The girls have played 4 regular season games, and have remained undefeated thus far in the season. read more

Starbucks Red Cup Debate

Starting early in November, stores transformed into holiday spectaculars. Trees appear decorated in many glitters and colours, Michael Bublè was heard almost everywhere,  and an enchanted winter throne was set up in every mall awaiting Santa Claus. Communities and businesses show their holiday spirit by adopting holiday decorations and playing Christmas music. However, in today’s continuously growing secular society, should businesses continue to promote the holidays? read more

Liberals Expanding Canadian Culture

Is there such thing as Canadian Culture?  This was a question I came across in Grade 10 Canadian History class, while learning about urbanization. This question surprised me. In fact, it angered me. As a patriotic Canadian and a fan of Canadian Arts, I did not understand how we could possibly lack culture. Quite simply, we don’t. However, Canadian Culture is often overlooked and under appreciated. Under Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, Canadian Culture underwent various cuts, but Justin Trudeau promises new change to turn that around. read more
