In a brief impromptu interview with TMZ, former Olympic champion and reality TV personality Caitlyn Jenner outlined her views on trans athletes in school sports, saying that she does not support trans girls playing on girls’ teams.

Jenner’s stance is particularly strange considering that she is a transgender woman herself as well as a former US Olympic gold medalist in the 1976 men’s decathlon event. “This is a question of fairness. That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school,” said Jenner, “It just isn’t fair. And we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools.” This interview was conducted in the wake of a polarizing issue in which upwards of 34 states are considering legislation that would ban trans athletes from competing based on their gender identity. Five states including Alabama, South Dakota and Arkansas have already enacted these bans this year. Moreover, Jenner has been planning to challenge California governor and Democrat Gavin Newsom in the state’s expected recall election this year. She would further reiterate her statement with a tweet after the interview but her campaign has not immediately responded to questions.

Inevitably, Jenner’s remarks have triggered a wave of backlash from LGBTQ activists on social media. Writer, LGBTQ activist and former press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign Charlotte Clymer responded with a tweet on the very same day, saying that Jenner is “dead wrong” and noting that athletes including Billie Jean King and Megan Rapinoe have spoken out against banning trans girls from playing on girls’ sports teams: “There is no evidence this is a problem anywhere.” Part of the backlash is directed at Jenner’s past support for former President Donald Trump as well as her failure to stand against administration policies that discriminated against trans people. To many, it would seem that Jenner is essentially using her platform to deny people who are already dealing with issues of exclusion and alienation from participating in their chosen sports.
