Carve the Mark

Rachel Yan (9) | STAFF REPORTER

Luke Tahaney stood in a circle with a dozen other spirits, around a huge orb of flame. Incandescent threads of light linked the shackles around their wrists to the ground.

The other spirits were barely lucid. Soon their chains would fade, and they would wander off into the darkness beyond the flame, lost forever.

Luke had been in Bradley’s mind for five years. Spirits come and go, never lasting long. He didn’t pity them. It was their own faults for having lived safe, timid lives. Now, after death, they were too weak to keep their grasp on the world.

They had all thought that by sticking to their comfortable morals, they would be remembered. They had all grown weaker as they faded from human memory.

It was so much easier to carve his mark in the world by doing evil.

Luke’s chains were bright and vivid.

“Go on,” Luke whispered.

Bradley took out his knife.

The floor was slick with blood. Grey horror flickered through Bradley’s fire.

“Take the scalpel,” Luke directed. “Carve the letters E.V.T into her left forearm.”

Not only was he already a famous serial killer, but death had not stopped him from claiming another victim.

Luke will never fade. He would be talked about, remembered. His legacy would keep him alive.
