This summer I went on a trip to Washington DC. The trip was amazing despite the sweltering weather. One of my favourite memories there was the visit to the Lincoln Memorial on the night of July 1st – Canada Day.

One Beautifully Wasted Morning

The van groaned as it hopped rather than drove down the road. I’d woken up at 4 am that morning, and I was finding it impossible to manage to fall asleep while being jostled around. I was in Sri Lanka, and my parents seemed super convinced that we absolutely had to see the sunrise from a famous lookout point in Nuwara Eliya.

I was so excited to spend this time hiking, exploring, and most importantly, relaxing. Although this was my second time being to these two provinces, I didn’t have much memory of my prior visit because I was young.

“Did you hear that train whistle? I just had the weirdest dr-” she suddenly sat up as if startled by my appearance. “Sam. Are you alright? You look like you’ve been terrified half to death by an open window. What happened?” Concern filled her voice.
