NINE-NINE!

The unique cop comedy Brooklyn nine-nine is really just one of those shows that can bring you to breathless laughter, even during your worst days. If I had to choose any character to be my favourite, I would have to go with resident goofball Jake Peralta — not simply because he’s the main character, but because he redefines the traditional male protagonist through his childlike fascination and creativity when solving problems and investigations.

Jake is best known for his fast wit, his charisma, and his immaturity despite the serious nature of his job as a detective. He frequently makes jokes, takes on ridiculous alibis, and gets extremely excited over the little experiences he has during his job; such as when he gets to plan a new Halloween Heist (a tradition at the Nine-Nine) or when he gets to recreate a real-life scene from his favourite cop movie, Die Hard. He doesn’t take himself or his job too seriously. That is to say, he isn’t driven to do well in his work because of the profit or the promotions; quite simply, he cracks cases for the fun and competition.

Compared to the average male protagonist in an action-packed TV show or movie, whose most defining characteristics tend to be their strength, willpower, or maturity in the face of difficulty — Jake is quite different. He isn’t the traditionally masculine or brawny superhero. His greatest strength, surprisingly, is his ability to goof around or think a little weirder. When everyone else is stressing out about a problem, Jake’s infectiously positive personality is what refocuses the group. Most importantly, Jake’s youthful nature is what makes him such an impressive detective. He tends to make unique connections that the people around him just don’t see, and he can be quite resilient on a case that motivates him, pushing himself to not give up on a case that has gone cold.

At the beginning of the show (despite all these charming characteristics) he is considered cocky, self-focused, occasionally very lazy, and unorganized. However, as the show progresses, with the help of the people around him, he is able to improve some of these weaknesses: to consider not just his own ability to succeed in a situation but to focus on the strength in a team.

In many of these instances, I relate strongly to Jake Peralta. He’s one of the only role models out there that reminds me to not take myself too seriously, even in the toughest of times.
