Imagine stepping into the Sheraton hotel lobby only to be greeted with the sight of thousands of high school students running around in business attire, professional smiles, and handshakes at the ready.
This is DECA Provincials.
From February 5-7, 103 members of the St. Robert’s DECA Chapter participated in the 36th annual DECA Provincial Competition at the Sheraton in downtown Toronto. As part of the largest youth business competition, St. Robert was up against six thousand other competitors from all across Ontario.
Students participated in one of three events: Writtens, where one to three participants take on the roles of hired consultants in an operation. After months of preparing a research paper of maximum 30 pages, they are given 15 minutes to present in front of a panel of judges. The Individual Oral Event is where a student is given ten minutes of preparation time to make sense of a real life business situation and then conduct a ten minute role-play in front of a judge. Team Events are similar to individual events except they involve two students with 30 minutes of preparation time for a 30 minute role play. After role-plays, each participant then writes a 100 question multiple choice exam in their category, and as Kathy D. (10) said it best,”Why didn’t I do more exams?”
Not only was it a great opportunity to apply business knowledge outside of the classroom, but it was also a great chance to reconnect with old friends and meet many new and like-minded people. As Annie L. (11) said, “You get to meet a lot of really motivated, passionate, and interesting people through DECA. We voluntarily do exams, make (sometimes) stressful presentations, and write long business plans, but being surrounded by people who love the experience as much as you do makes it all worthwhile.”
Thankfully, students also got the chance to have fun and relax. When not stressing about role-plays or cramming eight exams worth of information in a two hour span, students explored downtown, undertook new restaurant ventures and may have even caught a glimpse of Drake who, incredibly enough, was staying at the same hotel as the St. Robert DECA Chapter.
In true DECA fashion, Provincials ended with an extravagant awards ceremony, and with no doubt, St. Robert definitely made a name for itself.
