Demi Lovato has faced an ongoing struggle with bulimia and continues to remain candid with the world on her experiences, documenting her recent efforts in overcoming her battle and has become a public crusader against the illness. Though her efforts are generally applauded, a recent incident involving Lovato and a frozen yogurt store have generated mixed reviews.
On Sunday April 18, Demi Lovato looked to her 102.3 million followers on Instagram, accusing “The Big Chill”, a small frozen yogurt business in L.A, of being “diet culture vultures”. She writes, “Finding it extremely hard to order froyo from @thebiggchillofficial when you have to walk past tons of sugar free cookies/other diet foods before you get to the counter,” adding “Do better please” with the hashtag “#dietculturevultures.”
The Big Chill responded on Instagram, apologizing for her experience but also noting that they cater to those with certain dietary restrictions. They informed, “We carry items for Diabetics, Celiac disease, Vegan, and of course have many indulgent items as well.”
Demi then clapped back revealing her private messages with the shop in which they wrote, “We are not diet vultures. We cater to all of our customers’ needs for the past 36 years. We are sorry you found this offensive”.

With such an explosive international response, Demi decided to set the record straight and provide both an explanation and apology for her actions. Her apology in which she claimed the message was “misconstrued” and it was not her intent to undermine The Big Chill, put somewhat of an end to the feud. However, the mother-daughter owners of the shop commented on the apology saying it was “comical” and that Lovato did not directly contact the two, but her camp did, in order to lessen tensions.
