The Super League had been a long-discussed project which sought to establish a closed competition between Europe’s biggest clubs. Along with the twelve top clubs who intended to break away from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), there had been plans to add three more permanent members, while leaving five spots for other European clubs to qualify, for their own domestic competitions. The twelve clubs who were listed as the founding members included Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. Moreover, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was named as the chairman of the league, with Andrea Agnelli (Juventus) and Joel Glazer (Manchester United) serving as the vice-chairmen.
