As days go by and COVID restrictions increase, dreams of travel remain far from grasp, and vacation becomes an unreachable fantasy. Yet, despite this continued rise in cases, social media has been flooded with photos of countless “influencers” giving wings to our flights of fantasy. With travel being such a conflicting concept to our new reality, the question must be asked: Why are these influencers travelling during the pandemic?

Our question can be answered by Canada’s leading airline, “Air Canada.” Photos of our most beloved travel influencers can be attributed to the airline’s latest effort of promoting their business by working hand in hand with social media influencers to advertise the notion that travel during a pandemic, though frowned upon by the federal government, can be done safely. Social media accounts with large numbers of followers, most notably those of Jenna Lai and Daniel Reyes, are composed of a series of sponsored posts with the hashtag #bringingvacationsback with descriptions of praise for the use of safety measures and loving care taken by the company for their trips. In these past weeks the airline received a great deal of backlash for their marketing endeavour, with our very own Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau telling reporters, though more on a general note, “no one should be vacationing abroad right now.” followed by “You need to take this seriously.”

Still, to some extent the actions of “Air Canada” can be understandable. The industry has taken a huge hit as a result of the pandemic. The drop in passenger traffic has dropped significantly by almost 60 percent for the year 2020. But should their actions be excused?

Ken Wong, a business professor at Queen’s University, states his opinion on the issue, summing up the dilemma and our true sentiments towards their advertisements. “It’s not needed because every survey we see lists the need to travel as one of the first or second things people will do once we return to pre-pandemic life,” he said in an interview. “There’s no need to create demand for air travel, The demand already exists.”

As much as we would like to, travel remains for now, a figment of our imagination. Nonetheless, it will at some time come to pass, at which point we will all return to the beauties of travel. In the meantime, let’s keep up the good fight against our common enemy, the coronavirus!
