Is It Our Actions or Our Words That Define Who We Are?

In the passage of life, we seek happiness and opportunities, hoping for success, yet when we face our evitable death, we are left wondering about the choices which we made in our lives. Was what I did for the greater cause, or was it simply for my own greed? This pondering fills our heads with countless questions and regrets but still, mankind chases after the simple riches and power that we so desire.

For many, they have been cut down with hurtful words and betrayal, but for the guilty, does a change of heart make them innocent? Does an apology suddenly make the guilty seem less guilty? Our words and actions, do they reflect our true self, or are they simply just another way to mask our true intentions?

Words and actions are so frequently and carelessly used in phrases and in our daily lives, yet they carry so much meaning behind them.

Our words reflect our feelings, personality, value, thoughts, and beliefs. On the other hand, our actions are how we respond to different situations and relationships. It’s what we do for others and to ourselves that reflects our thoughts. Influential people such as Martin Luther King Jr. with his “I have a dream” speech, and Princess Diana who became the voice of those struggling with various illnesses, reflect the importance of needing and using both words and actions in our lives. It is truly what unites the world together, no matter the distance and the people.

Yet the question remains: which one plays a greater role in our identity? Now this is a debatable question, since there are cases where peoples’ words and actions may not align together. Their words have the intention to please you, and their actions seem to have the intention to help you, but deep down where our true feelings lie, are they truly doing all this out of goodness? However, as people say, “Beware of those whose actions don’t match their words”, your action creates a greater impact. If I tell others that I’m lazy and I believe it, yet I use my time productively, am I truly lazy or is it merely perspective? The words I say may showcase a part of my thoughts, but I believe that it is my actions that truly reveal who I am.
