Social Justice’s Global Outreach

As part of a Catholic community, St. Robert always strives to give back to those in need and one of the many clubs that helps make this possible is Social Justice, which has been part of the school community for many years. Its goal this year is to partner with Free the Children and Me-to-We to build yet another school as part of the Adopt-A-Village program. Social Justice continues to make a great impact on the school community as it brings awareness to global issues and encourages the school staff and students to participate in fundraisers and volunteering opportunities.  For the month of October, Social Justice started a “We Scare Hunger” food drive for Halloween. It is small acts like these that go a long way to better the life of families in need. As said by Amanda F. (12), the Social justice President, read more

Have Time to Spare? Looking for a Bite? Try These Places

It’s no mystery that the school of St. Robert is located in the middle of nowhere – much akin to the Sahara Desert or the North Pole. As such, students rarely get to experience life outside of school walls during school hours, with the opportunity to eat elsewhere being few and far between. Sadly, these conditions are unlikely to be remedied in a timely fashion. However, for the students who are lucky enough to have a spare (or for those who just walk really fast), there exists a healthy number of alternatives to the cafeteria – only a twenty minute walk away. read more

The Boxtrolls: A Quirky, Amazingly Bizarre Delight

8/10

From Laika Studios (creators of films such as Coraline and ParaNorman) comes yet another dark and delightfully quirky film, The Boxtrolls. Based on Alan Snow’s book, Here Be Monsters!, this movie takes place in an old English village, where Boxtrolls are believed to be man-eating, baby-stealing menaces to society. In truth, they are kind, lovable creatures who simply wish to live in harmony with the humans. Living amongst these box-wearing creatures is a human boy by the name of Eggs (Isaac Hempstead  Wright) who was saved as a baby by a Boxtroll and raised to believe that he is one of them. Regardless of their peaceful nature, however, the humans want the Boxtrolls gone, and leading the extermination of their kind is the wicked Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley), a disgusting, if rather humourous, man who has an agenda of his own. It’s up to Eggs, his family of Boxtrolls, and his new-found, fiery spitfire of a friend, Winnie (Elle Fanning) to put a stop to Snatcher’s nefarious plans and to prove wrong the humans’ assumptions of Boxtrolls once and for all. read more

The Rams Splash the Mustangs

On Monday, October 20th, there was a showdown in Motown. The St. Robert Rams junior girls basketball team hosted a good match-up against the Alexander Mackenzie Mustangs. The night started out rough as the Rams allowed back-to-back baskets in what seemed to be a momentum builder for the Mustangs. The Rams quickly regained their pace, though, as they started with a well-executed inbound play to score, followed by forced turnovers and steals. That wasn’t the end of it – the Rams demonstrated excellent all-around ability as they hammered the Mustangs in the post on both offense and defense. The Rams put on a show in the first half by wowing the crowd with three point plays and circus shots. It was as if they were executing plays straight from the San Antonio Spurs’ playbook! They led 24-14 going into halftime. read more
