Pandora’s Electricity Box

Rachel Yan (10) | STAFF REPORTER

I regarded the dark green metal box before me. It stood on its concrete slab base, and reached almost up to my shoulder in height. Stepping closer, I put my hands on the metal knobs of the two doors in its front, and grasped them firmly. I knew that this was dangerous; I had seen the warning signs reading “Do not open” and “Danger: High voltage”, but I had to see for myself. This was forbidden knowledge that I couldn’t resist any longer.

I gave a firm tug and stumbled backwards as the doors clicked open, surprisingly unlocked. I opened the door slowly, a great white light glaring out from between their edges. As the glow faded somewhat, I edged the doors open the whole way and peered inside.

The inside of the box was lined with white glinting quartz. There, sitting within the blinding nest of light, was a huge, majestic seagull. Its neck and belly were lined with fine, soft feathers. Its eye was a slate blue that shone like mercury, and the beak a metallic gold. On its wings, the grey feathers gave way to flat crystal fractals that lined the edges of each wing. With a loud clacking sound, the bird shifted its wings. The crystal feathers flared open like a fan of shimmering glass, revealing each iridescent feather with edges sharp enough to slice through one’s throat.

There were ornate golden clamps clipped on many parts of the bird’s body; the head, neck, wing joints, and legs. Shiny wires connected from the clamps to sockets embedded in the quartz wall of the box.

As I continued to stare in awe, I saw in the bird’s eyes the rage it felt at my disturbance. Giving a mighty caw, it burst out of the box, tearing the wires free from the clamps. It launched itself at me with a great flap of its wings.
