AI has increasingly become a crucial part of our lives, particularly in schools as it is used not only by students but by teachers, too. As AI continues to advance, we see teachers rely on it more frequently; however, teachers using AI to do everything from grading assignments to preparing lesson plans is simply unacceptable.
To allow teachers to use AI for all their tasks defeats the purpose of a teacher. If you want to become a teacher in Ontario, you need to complete a bachelor’s degree, complete a four semester teacher education program, and then apply for certification with the Ontario College of Teachers. It is a result of all these years of learning that teachers can prepare lesson plans, create assessments, and grade work with competence and efficiency. If AI is doing such a large portion of the teacher’s work, we can only question the future of this profession.
There is no doubt that AI is certainly a great tool to facilitate the teacher’s tasks, but the problem lies when it is too heavily relied upon. By creating their own assignments and lessons, teachers are able to get a good understanding of their lessons and adjust them to their students’ levels. Of course, teachers can still use AI to help, but it’s important for them to lean on their own abilities and not all on AI.
