“Hurry up, John.” Mark was looking back, waiting for me to catch up. We had gone hiking for an hour, and I was already starting to feel the beginnings of weariness. I jogged up to him and we started walking again.
“Ah, it’s such a nice day today. We should really get out more on days like this, don’t you agree?” Mark said over his back.
“Yea yea.” I stretched and closed my eyes to savour the nice breeze coming in.
Suddenly I heard someone crying.
“Mark, you good?” I opened my eyes concerned.
What appeared in front of me was not the trail we were on, or rather it was the trail but changed immensely. In front of me was a horrifying sight. A stone statue, worn down by age but still distinctly in the shape of Mark. The vegetation around us had changed too. The path was completely covered in vines and the trees next to us were five times as big. It was as if the environment had been given an injection of steroids and grown out of control.
I rubbed my eyes and blinked. Everything was back to normal and Mark was looking back expectantly.
“What’s wrong mate? Let’s get going.”
Shaking my head, I caught up and we started talking about our plans for the summer vacation.
I blinked and I was back in that apocalyptic scenery. I noticed the man weeping in front of me.

Finally, someone has awoken.” His voice was raspy from the lack of use. I looked him up and down. His hair long and tangled, his skin browned from the sun and peeling. When he spoke, his teeth were yellow and his eyes looked weary and were rimmed with tears.
“W-what is going on?” I asked bewildered.
“Humanity, or at least everyone in this area, has been turned to stone for the past 84 plus years.”
“84 years?” I exclaimed, “But I was just walking with my buddy a few seconds ago. And what’s going on with this switching back and forth?”
“What switching back and forth?” Mark asked. “Want to take a break?”.
I nodded and sat down to recollect my thoughts. What was going on?
As I was thinking, a bright white light flashed across the sky and I was back in the otherworldly scenery.
“-and I theorized that this may be because of aliens.”, the old man said, as if no time had passed. I must have seemed confused because the man suddenly stopped and said, “Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t even introduce myself. My name’s Edward.”
“John.” I said shaking his hand.
“You must be confused about what’s happening. Come with me and I’ll tell you everything I know.”
