Award show season is finally kicking off! On February 8th, the world-renowned Oscars announced the 2021-2022 94th Academy Award nominations. The Oscars are not just world-renowned for their excitement. Insiders and critics alike are well aware of the popularity contest persona that this acclaimed competition has taken on. Yet, this year’s Oscars are not any less entertaining than its predecessors; there will always be countless surprises and snubs, but here are just a few.
Magazine outlets and film fanatics across social media all observed an influx in diversity pervasive throughout the Oscars voting pool. Since the headline-controversial #OscarsSoWhite in 2016, the Oscars finally pushed for more diversification in voters by increasing the pool worldwide to a 9 500 member cap, and they achieved the intended results: more diversification in voters translated into multiple brilliant international film breakthroughs amongst our list of nominees. We saw the extraordinary Japanese film Drive my Car surprisingly make headlines beyond the international category. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s movie was additionally nominated in Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay! This was the first for a Japanese film to be nominated in so many categories, demonstrating that this opening of a voter pool allowed for humbler, artistic films like these to be celebrated for their merits. CODA, Flee, Encanto, and West Side Story were also jubilant surprises in terms of diversity; we got a deaf community-focused film, a queer refugee film, and two Latino community-highlighting films too! While the actor and actress categories still have a long way to go, these strides made in the film categories are pleasantly surprising and definitely something to marvel over.

There have been many advertisements lately that have been advertising about erectile dysfunction and they were forced to ingest hokey cure-alls and dubious tadalafil cheap india panaceas to treat their erection-related problems. However, we can’t have positive curveballs without their unique negative snubs and disappointments. Watchers and critics were extremely divided about Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, but more than a few were extremely disappointed with the Academy’s infatuation with such a poorly executed environmental film inundated with satire. The film’s allegory illustrates how humanity is surrounded by this bountiful technology and urges viewers to get off their mobile phones and do something about this impending doom climate change shall bring forth soon. Critics were unhappy with the dry political humour and incorrect political prejudices, but that did not stop the Academy from handing out numerous similar nominations.
Dear 95th Academy Awards, in the future, Oscars watchers hope for more pleasantly surprising diversification in other categories and for fewer snubs just to include the highest-paid or most famous actors/actresses. We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
