Tasting Colours

Melinda Li (9) | STAFF REPORTER

I unscrew the lid of the jar. Inside, a small sphere-like ball, sitting still inside. I pick it up. Blue. It feels like a jawbreaker. I pop it into my mouth and the flavours start pouring out. It’s very minty, so much so my mouth feels like the Arctic. I inhale and the cold gush of minty wind enters my throat.

I let the ball sit on my tongue as it, like a melting iceberg, slowly dissolves. I rinse my mouth with water, neutralizing my taste buds as the Arctic washes away as well. I take a look and start unscrewing the lid of the red ball. It looks like a cherry. As soon as I place it in my mouth, a volcano erupts. Fire is all I can think of. Meteors blast the place. Chaos. I spit it out and gulp tons of water to make sure that all the fires are put out.

Green tasted like a bittermelon. Yellow was like biting into a lemon. White was the same as eating a spoonful of salt; I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if there had been some steak nearby. Finally, all that was left was a pink fluff ball. It was weightless and softer than a blanket. I carefully placed it in my mouth. It didn’t last more than ten seconds, but those ten seconds were like heaven. It was like cotton candy, but much sweeter and much softer. It was like being in the clouds surrounded by flying unicorns. The stars are glitter balls and the sky is the colour of sunset pink.

After ten seconds, all of these things disappear and I am plopped back down into reality. I sit back, taking a look at all the colours I’ve tried. What a tiring day for my tongue!
