Under the lead Paul Flemming, the senior men’s team of Nova Scotia takes the Canadian senior men’s curling championship. On December 9th, the team, represented by Peter Burgess, Marty Gavin, Kris Granchelli, and Paul Flemming, outwins Saskatchewan by 4-3 in Vernon, BC.
Curling is a winter team sport played on ice, with the aim of sliding a stone and targeting its landing in an area from a certain distance. Two teams take turns sliding the stone, each trying to place their stone closer to the center than the other team. The skipper, or team captain, carries the responsibility of maintaining effective communication, determining strategy, calling shots, etc.
The victory of team Nova Scotia secures the team a place in the world championships taking place in Sweden in April. For Nova Scotia, this marks the second championship, the last being in 2014 led by Alan O’Leary.
After receiving the trophy, Flemming advises that, “The last thing you want to do is look too far ahead and think of results. It’s just one end at a time and try to manage control of the curling game.”
However, Flemming, skipper of the team, did not have an easy week leading up to the championships, as he was hospitalized for chest infections. Luckily, a quick recovery helped Flemming resume regular curling activities again.
“Over lots of years and lots of decades, things tend to even out,” Flemming said in the release.
“We’ve been on the losing side of these things over the years as well. It feels good to be on this side of it” Flemming says.
Along with team Nova Scotia, team Ontario skipped by Susan Froud wins gold and thus will also be partaking in the trip to Sweden next year.
