The Flint water crisis first started in April 2014 when the drinking water source for the city of Flint, Michigan was changed from Lake Huron and the Detroit River to Flint River, just because of the cost. Due to insufficient water treatment, lead leaked from the water pipes into the drinking water, contaminating the water supply.
After the water source switched to the Flint River, locals and city residents complained about the water’s colour, odour, and taste. In September of that year, city officials detected coliform bacteria and released a boil water advisory for a neighbourhood on the west side of Flint. General Motors made a complaint about how the water was corroding, and damaging car parts and General Motors stopped using Flint River water in October 2014.
Prior to August 2014, additional chlorine was added to the water to eliminate bacteria in the Flint River, which was likely the cause of more TMHs, an unsafe environmental pollutant in one of eight water locations. If exposed to this chemical for a long period of time chances of getting cancer and other diseases increases.
However, the employees of the Flint Public Library declared that the water was unsafe when they noticed the water’s funky look, despite the city’s claim that it was safe. Since then, the library has been a safe provider for water in the city.
In the beginning of the new year of 2015, January and February 2015, tests show that the city water met all health and safety standards, but the Detroit water system offered to reconnect Flint, but this offer was declined by the emergency manager Jerry Ambrose, “there was no imminent threat to public health”.

In March 2015, Flint voted to switch back to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, this vote was motivated mainly by residential complaints and recommendations from Veolia North America.
In August 2015, local organizations observed that the water was orange because of high concentrations of chloride, and the water contained high levels of lead. The lead levels caused excessive damage to the iron pipes. There were three organizations that delivered more than 26,000 online petition signatures to Mayor Dayne Walling, demanding the city end its use of the Flint River and reconnect to the Detroit water system.
In early 2017, the water quality had improved; however, residents were instructed to continue to use bottled or filtered water until all the lead pipes have been replaced, which is expected to be completed no sooner than 2020.
On April 6, 2018, Governor Snyder announced the end of a free bottled water program in Flint, claiming the water quality has been restored. The state was handing out bottles of water at several distribution points across the city and will stop once the current supply runs out.
