On December 1, 2017, the grade 12 IB students at St. Robert CHS started their chemistry I.A.
An I.A. is an internal assessment in which the students are asked to design their own lab to investigate a research question that they came up with. Eventually, the students have to carry out the lab and provide a write-up on the results.
The I.A. gives the grade 12 IB students an opportunity to learn how to properly execute a lab procedure. This skill can be helpful for students in the future, especially in university as there could be situations where they are required to do research by themselves. Rachel Lee (12) said, “I am excited to perform a lab that I have designed by myself.” For her chemistry I.A, Rachel is conducting an experiment that determines the calcium content in foods through titration.
In February, another half of the gr. 12 IB students will also be executing an independent investigation. Candace Kim (12) revealed that she is nervous about her lab, but she is looking forward to this internal investigation. She believes that the I.A will help students truly apply the lab skills they learned throughout the years.
Overall, the I.A. will help the grade 12 IB students acquire new skills and knowledge.
