On October 5, 2017, the New York Times published a story titled “Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades” which commenced a domino effect of women and men alike speaking up and sharing their experiences of sexual harassment.
More women came forward with their stories of Weinstein, with other celebrities backing them up; from there, other powerful men have been accused. The #MeToo movement, which is now all over social media, is a platform for both women and men to share their stories of sexual harassment.
In the original article published by the New York Times, actress Ashley Judd spoke about being sent to his hotel room where he asked if she could watch him shower, or let him massage her. According to the story, at least eight settlements had been reached between Weinstein and his accusers in an attempt to prevent them from speaking out. After the publication of the article, more women stepped forward to tell their stories of his advances, including Cara Delevingne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Lena Headey, Lupita Nyong’o, and many more.
A large number of women have also accused him of rape. A statement released by his representatives states he “unequivocally denied” the rape allegations.
