The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event that occurs every 4 years among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations (including territories of the former British Empire).

To revitalize Canada’s presence in the Commonwealth sporting community, Manitoba, among 4 other Canadian provinces, is exploring a collaborative bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Referred to as the “United Canada” concept, they aim to distribute costs and responsibilities across multiple jurisdictions, as a strategic response to the financial challenges (projected costs of approximately $2.68 billion) that have led other regions to withdraw from hosting major international sporting events like these Games.

For example, organizers are planning to utilize already existing sports venues, with minimal new construction. This will potentially lower costs by up to 60% compared to previous estimates. Additionally, they plan to host events on First Nations territories, with considerations for incorporating lacrosse, Canada’s national summer sport, into the Games.

The Commonwealth Games Federation is accepting expressions of interest for the 2030 Games until March 31st, with a host city announcement expected in November.
