After being cancelled back in 2020, fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala, was revived on the first Monday in May 2022. Organizers revealed that the theme of this glitzy, long-awaited night was “Glided Glamour,” leading the general public to anticipate themes of celebrating 19th-century opulence and grandeur evoked by the sartorial red-carpet looks. However, viewers were underwhelmed, to say the least. They were disappointed by the rise of social media trendy outfits which were worn by some celebrities and the demise of simply beautiful, chic apparel during these premier fashion exhibitions, affectionately coining this issue with a question, “Who Understood the Assignment?”
Up first on the list of A+ assignment students –Blake Lively, one of this year’s Met Gala four co-hosts, set the tone for the night with her stunning, more-than-meets-the-eye dress that resembles the New York’s Statue of Liberty. Copper gold to blue was one of the best ways to remind audiences of vintage, classy glamour.
Black and feathers were a popular theme amongst the vast majority of “Glided Glamour” appearances during the Met Gala, but unlike most funeral-appropriate attire, viewers would agree that singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves executed this one right!
Of course, there is no forgetting Billie Eilish with her figure-complimenting corset and even better, her advocacy for sustainable, vintage fashion. She arguably donned the best look amongst all the corset-wearers of that night.
Shawn Mendes eerily resembles Gaston from Beauty and the Beast in his Met Gala interpretation, but nonetheless, viewers loved how majestic yet minimalistic the outfit was.
David Harbour also did extremely well on this assignment, showing off his old-age black tophat and a black coattail tuxedo whilst celebrating his wife Lily Allen’s birthday.
Last but not least, Kim K arrived at the party with her beau Pete Davidson in a marvellous dress that was actually worn by Marilyn Monroe! This iconic dress appeared at JFK’s birthday party when Monroe sang the birthday anthem to him.
