The long-awaited movie Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve, finally hit theatres on October 22 of 2021, starring Timothée Chalamet and co-star Zendaya. After fans watched the movie, many were disappointed with how short Zendaya’s screen time was, despite being a major part of Dune’s marketing campaign.

During the entire 2 hours and 35 minutes of the film, Zendaya only appears on screen for about seven minutes total. This left fans outraged, with one tweeting “The credits were longer than Zendaya’s camera time in Dune”. The underwhelming use of the actor in this film has left many fans to take their complaints to social media, making their disappointments known.

Even though Zendaya’s character Chani was not a major character in the original Dune novels written by Frank Herbert in 1965, she was still marketed in a way that fans expected to see her as a leading role in the film. Many have expressed that Zendaya’s participation in the marketing for the movie, such as the press conferences, movie trailers, and posters prior to the movie being released, were completely misleading, as she ended up as only being a supporting character with only seven minutes of screen time throughout the whole movie.

Through all of the outrage regarding Zendaya’s lack of screen time, the director of the film has finally spoken out about the situation, saying that only half of the book has been covered in this film. He plans to release the second Dune film two years from now in October 2023. He has promised fans that in the second movie, Dune: Part Two, he will put more time into the characters that were left aside in the first film. Hopefully, in the next portion movie of the series, we will be able to see more of Zendaya on screen.
