The 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Monday, January 31, 2022, streaming live from the STAPLES Center in downtown L.A.

Amid the scrutiny faced over the last year, the GRAMMYS have chosen to reinvent themselves. These changes will include reductions in the number of categories voters can vote for, two category additions, along with some new restrictions and limitations to existing categories.

The first changes in their new system include new restrictions on the voting process. Instead of having 15-30 music experts represent a genre and select the final nominees, as was done before, the voting process will be put in the hands of the entire voting body. It has also been confirmed that 90% of all voters will undergo a requalification process to ensure that they are “actively engaged in music creation”, as stated on the GRAMMY Awards website.

Next, a restriction placed on the number of voting fields voters can vote in has been reduced from 15 to 10, which may be in no more than three fields. However, all voters are permitted to vote in the General Field categories (Album of the Year, Song of the Year, etc.).

Additionally, two new categories have been added, bringing the total number of Award categories to 86. The categories added are Best Global Musical Performance (Global Music Field) and Best Música Urbana Album (Latin Music Field).

Lastly, restrictions and changes made to existing categories made include no limits to the eligibility of contributors to be nominated for an Album of the Year Award (no longer need specific credentials), the Best Dance Recording category has been renamed Best Dance/Electronic Recording. A second Technical GRAMMY Award has been added and is reserved for a company, organization or institution. Finally an update to the Album eligibility, an album must contain at least 75% of newly recorded songs (within the last 5 years) and previously unreleased recordings. This final change will only be effective as of 2023.

The GRAMMYS has undergone some major changes to their, heavily criticized, system. This is quite the grand attempt at integrity.
