2199: Is It True?

Artificial Intelligence is a fairly new controversial topic. One of the first questions dissenters would likely consider is: “Will machines take over?”

The movie The Matrix, produced in 1999, explores this question. Even though this movie came out 19 years ago, it is not obsolete. Given the modern advances in technology and their alarming rate, this question holds some validity.

In the movie, humanity is enslaved by the machines and used for their bioelectricity as batteries. At some point prior to the First Machine War, machines became sentient and were outraged at being treated like objects. The tension erupted when a house-robot killed its owner, who was planning on replacing it. War was declared in the year 2199.

The first machines were solar-powered so the humans wreaked havoc on the atmosphere to block out the Sun. Their efforts were in vain – the machines learned to program themselves to function without sunlight. They became more insect-like. Eventually, there was only one haven for humans – a city named Zion.

This elaborate speculation makes the actual events of 2199 intriguing. If I had the opportunity to time travel, my first goal would be to find out and hopefully, not to follow in the paw-steps of the metaphorical cat.
