On April 3rd, hip-hop star Doja Cat won her very first Grammy, after 11 nominations, for her hit single “Kiss Me More.” But just days before, after being called out by fans, Doja Cat threatened to quit music for good.
Doja Cat was set to perform at the Asunciónico Festival in Paraguay on March 22, but had to cancel due to weather complications. Upset fans took to social media to call out Doja Cat for not reaching out to them post-cancelation. The following day, in a now deleted tweet, Doja had said that she had left her hotel and was surprised to find no fans waiting for her, to which a fan replied saying that the fans who had waited for her in the wind and rain were probably not eager to wait again.
Following continuous back and forth between and the music star and her fans, Doja Cat made a surprising announcement saying “I don’t give a f*** anymore. I f***in quit, I can’t wait to f***ing disappear and I don’t need you to believe in me anymore. Everything is dead to me, music is dead, and I’m a f***ing fool for ever thinking I was made for this, this is a f**ing nightmare, unfollow me.”
On March 27th, Doja Cat took again to Twitter to apologize to her fans for her behaviour, saying “I can travel, I can eat good food, I can see new people, I can smile, I can make memories that I dreamed of having, I can laugh, I can support my family and my friends, I can learn about the world, and I can give back to everyone because of you,” she then added “I owe myself a lot too. I owe myself the chance to open up and be good to people. I owe myself the death of my fears that don’t allow me to expand my heart. I didn’t come to another country to do something I can do everywhere else. that would be pointless in a way.”
Her Twitter name before her apology tweets was “I quit still,” but has since been changed.
Following her Grammy win for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance along with SZA, Doja Cat took to twitter to thank her fans, “Thank you guys,” she wrote.
Everyone has bad days, and sometimes this results in saying things we don’t mean, however, I, for one, am ecstatic Doja Cat will in fact be continuing to make music.
