Addressing Bullying: Can it be Stopped?

Eva Guo (9) | STAFF REPORTER

Bullying awareness week was where people drew attention to bullying and campaigned against it. However, how effective are these campaigns? Can bullying even be stopped?

There is no point in standalone campaigns. We are all aware that bullying exists and that it is an issue. However, what is the point of so-called “awareness” if the issue is rarely dealt with? It is not enough to claim that bullying is bad and proceed to do nothing as people fall victim to it. That is like creating a law but doing nothing to enforce it; trusting people to “do what is right”.

Assuming everyone does their part to solve the problem of bullying, it still cannot be completely stopped. There will always be people who wish to hurt others and some of them are bound to slip under the radar. Even if a law is strictly enforced, there are still people unafraid of breaking that law.

As we do not live in an ideal society, the issue of bullying can unfortunately never be resolved. Although bullying cannot be eradicated, it can be limited if the majority puts in the effort. Even if bullying is only decreased by a small amount, it is still better than nothing and can still make a difference. It is also extremely important to extend a helping hand to victims of bullying and ensure their well being.
