Many students misconceive academic transcripts to define their future. However, with time, they learn that the educational world is not a microcosm of the real world, but a minuscule branch of it. With building pressure for students to perform in the here and now, where would students be able to learn the essential skills needed for their potential careers? For grade 9s in Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba, Take Your Kid to Work Day is the supposed answer.
That is why three courageous grade nine students – Lillian, Jin, and Judy – took advantage of this marvelous opportunity and embarked on an epic journey across the downtown of Toronto – repeatedly getting lost and almost getting run over – yet nonetheless experiencing a day they could never forget.
Nearly a month ago, the three girls attended the JournalismNow Conference for high school students. After experiencing the breakout session, “Getting Into the TV Studio”, they were so amazed by the funding and work that went into a live broadcast that they asked to come back for Take Your Kid to Work Day. To their delight, the girls learned that their request could be fulfilled.
Fast-forward to November 14, 2018, the three girls were excitedly boarding Line 1 to make their way downtown to reconcile with Gary Gould, the journalism professor at Ryerson School of Journalism who had first introduced them to the realm of live broadcasting.
Following a warm welcome, Jin, Judy, and Lillian entered the Allan Slaight Radio Institute for their very first radio interview. For a comfortable twenty minutes, they conversed with Dr. Gould about various different topics before sitting in on the recording of the Ryersonian’s news update.
Soon afterward, the girls were thrust into the world of news broadcast production, as they helped record the weather segment for RyersonianTV. “Even a simple news segment can take dozens of takes to correctly film – there is a lot of energy that goes into crafting a thirty-minute show!” claimed Jin, who diligently worked as the floor director, while Judy and Lillian managed the audio and video, respectively. Throughout the segment, they learned the challenges of perfecting live broadcast but simultaneously appearing calm and collected.

Ultimately, TYKTW Day was no ordinary experience for Judy, Jin, and Lillian. They were able to experience the stress of the workplace, but also the enjoyment and fulfillment in pursuing the passion you love. They encourage all future Grade 9s to take advantage of this fleeting opportunity, and to chase these opportunities as they come flying by later in high school.
