On November 10th, the St. Robert’s varsity girl’s basketball team had their last game of the season against St. Brother Andre in the playoffs. It was a well-played game that finished 55-47 in St. Brother Andre’s favour. As the season ended, we interviewed some members of the team and Ms. Morale, who was the coach, about the teamwork, training, and effort put into the season this year.

The St. Roberts cafeteria food is a controversial subject among staff and students. There are usually about 7 dishes on the menu at a time. Every day, there are chocolate chip cookies, pizza, french fries, and spicy beef patties available, along with other alternating dishes. The main point of contention is the price of the food. To put things in perspective, one serving of fries costs $4 and one cookie costs $2.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, also known as CUPE, recently went on strike this November. CUPE represents workers in many different fields, but recently the early educators and educational assistants’ union went on strike requesting an 11.7% increase in pay. The provincial government attempted to pass a controversial bill preventing them from striking, which was eventually cancelled to foster future negotiations after backlash. This strike directly affected our school, since we rely on educational assistants for a number of things.

During the week of November 21st, the St. Robert community observed the annual Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week.

A tradition at our school that is most looked forward to is Civvies Day. It is a special day at our school that usually occurs every first Thursday of the month. It is a chance for students to wear whatever they wish, as long as it conforms to the Dress Code and Student Code of Conduct. Everyone looks forward to this day as they can express themselves through their fashion and get out of the stiff uniform that they wear every day.

November 11th is a time to remember and reflect. On November 11th, 2022, we as the St. Robert’s community came together on this day to acknowledge the lives given during the First World War. An assembly to commemorate soldiers was held in the large gym and live-streamed in the cafeteria.

Recently, St. Robert students received their mid-term report cards. We asked some school community members to share their thoughts about the school year so far, as well as how they felt about their grades now that we are halfway through the first semester of this academic year. We also interviewed philosophy and religion teacher Ms. Roccari on her perspective on students this school year

The Varsity Girl’s basketball team has just finished their season. With three-pointers from every angle and great defence, the team was able to win 4 games this season, falling short to St. Brother Andre by 8 points.

Transgender Day of Visibility is celebrated annually on March 31st. On this day, we celebrate the accomplishments of Transgender and other gender minorities, such as non-binary people. It is also a day to recognize the work that has yet to be done to achieve justice and equality for Transgender people and challenge our own biases and prejudices.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) administers the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) to determine whether students have acquired the minimum literacy (reading and writing) skills expected by the Ontario Curriculum across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9.
