Film Review: The Menu

Are you hungry for a new film to watch in the theatre? A movie called The Menu sounds like it could be absolutely delectable right now.

Director Mark Mylod’s new film, The Menu, has just come out on November 18, 2022, and it stars some familiar favourites like Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nicholas Holt.

The film follows the story of a young couple, Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Holt), as they visit a very exclusive and high-class restaurant on a remote island owned by the acclaimed celebrity chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). But as the night goes on, the customers soon realize there is more to this night of fine dining than they have ever bargained for.

Marketed as a black comedy horror/thriller, this movie will far exceed your expectations. The ensemble cast brings forward both haunting and hilarious moments. The soundtrack (or lack thereof at certain moments) only adds to the overall ambiance, making it a great film to see at the cinema.

This film takes the expression “eat the rich” to a whole new level, commenting on the social state of the service industry in correlation with the upper class’s habit of only taking and not giving. Although this message is a bit overused, Mylod adds a cheeky and satirical twist to the way he unfolds this story, making this one of the most memorable messagings of “down with the rich.”

The way this film is structured is unique and will stay fresh in your mind for hours after it has concluded. This film has been described as strange and odd, but it still has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89% as of November 24, 2022, based on 213 critic reviews.

Whether you’re hungry for a fancy-schmancy meal or just a good ‘ol classic cheeseburger, I highly recommend that you give this film a taste.
