On November 1, 2023, most of the grade nine students were away to participate in Take Our Kids to Work Day. This is a nationwide event that takes place every year on the first Wednesday of November. It is an opportunity for students around the country to experience different careers firsthand.
Take Your Kid to Work Day started in 1994 with the intention of giving new high school students the opportunity to see their parents’ workplaces and to experience the ‘adult life’ of going to work. The idea came from the United States’ event, Take our Daughters to Work Day which eventually turned into Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
Many organizations have designated programs for Take Our Kids to Work Day. For these programs, grade nines would be dropped off at a certain location and would spend half of their day learning about the jobs the company/organization offers. For the second half of their day, they would trail their guardian (or the one who is taking them) and would follow them until they got off work. There are also many workplaces who do not have the programs, in which case the students would just follow the one who brought them there for the whole day.
Upon returning to school the next day, many grade nines shared their experiences with the special day. Many students said that their day had been meaningful and that they enjoyed learning about the different workplaces. Other students said that they didn’t have the most wonderful time, but they were still glad they went. Overall, Take Our Kids to Work Day is an interesting event that provides students with the wonderful opportunity of learning more about different career paths.
