Lords of Waterdeep is a competitive, economic game and personally one of my recent favourites.
It’s also 10,000 x better than Monopoly.
It can be played by two to five players (up to six with the expansion), and only costs around $50 after tax for just the base game.
Many new players will consider LoW daunting at first. It is a break-away from more conventional games such as Monopoly where managing resources is relatively limited.
In the board games world, LoW would be considered an intermediate level game and a great board game to introduce newer players to more complex game mechanics, such as multiple resource management and longer term planning. But, hey, Monopoly’s most complex mechanic is wasting time!
In a single feeling, LoW will make you feel awesome for outsmarting your truly inferior friends.
Because you just destroyed them.

Surprisingly enough, unlike other multi-player games, it has a crazy amount of content packed inside of it, considering that it rivals games that have double, or even triple, its game-time while remaining relatively simple to play. This is because LoW is literally different each time you play it due to the random lord you are assigned, the random generation of quests, and the random placement of buildings.

*Whereas Monopoly has some of the worst gameplay I have ever seen and takes about three hours to finish.
**Though Monopoly only costs around $25 after tax so I suppose you get way more value per dollar spent, as long as you’re willing to give up a few brain cells each time you play Monopoly.
